BMW's modern Le Mans assault started off a bit auspiciously in '98.
The innovative V12 LM had been contructed coöperation with Williams and was the first car to incorporate a raised footbox and front nose diffuser.
After a succesfull Pre Qual BMW though that their two V12 LM's were well prepared. But the 1000's of testmiles turned useless when, after less than 3 hrs, a (new) untested upright failed and caused the withdrawel of both cars.

Both 98 LM's returned a year later in the hands of customer teams Goh and Bscher Motorsport.
One of them did play a significant role in the victory of its succesor the "99" LMR.
Locked in a last hour battle with Toyota, it was the Black Bscher LM that forced a charging Katayama on the dirty line of the Mulsanne straight.
Picked up debris instantly deflated both Toyota's left rear tyre and all its hopes of outright victory.
The rest as they say... is history.
