Workshop Mold making and Lamination 17-18 March
tamar - 9-3-2007 at 00:28

Hallo slotters

Hello Slotters
As promised during the last races there will be a Mold making and Lamination workshop in Amsterdam next weekend

During the workshop I will explain how to make a silicone mold and how you laminate a body. During the weeekend there's the possebility to make your own mold and laminate your own body (after all it is a work shop)
Goal of the workshop is that you'll be able to make your own mold's and laminations @ home

Due to the curing time of both the silicone and the laminations you will need the whole weekend so an overnight stay in Amsterdam (or Amsterdam area) is neccesary

As we will have to order materials (Epxoyresin, GFK and Carbon etc) for those attending the workshop, it is important that we know who will come

So if you want to attend this workshop, please confirm that your coming via this thread. Do you need help finding acommodation..post here as well

Hi Tamar,

now I know the date, but where is it?

Thanks for a short hint

Regards

Udo

tamar - 9-3-2007 at 01:02

Hello Udo
Your up late...and fast too, I was still editing the post and you've already replied :D

Location of the workshop is
Victoryplein 25 basement, Amsterdam, The Netherlands....
...the location of "the club formerly know as Hot Slot"

Start time will be Saturday morning, exact time depending on when most guys can be in Amsterdam, although some will probably come Friday evening.

If you mail me I will send you an itenary.
It is also helpfull if those who want to attend, tell me what they would like to do most, so I can prepare somthing next week

tamar - 9-3-2007 at 01:38

Here an idication of what you'll need for the materials

All together some €85, and as I will have to buy this stuff before, those who post that they're coming will be billed for this even if they dont show up! I hope every body can understand this:D

Note: I use a special thicker Epoxy resin to laminate the bodies, the advantage is that this resin "sticks" better to the sides of the silicone mold (it does'nt flow so easy to the bottom of your mold) the downside is that its only produced by my local supplier Polyservice. Upon request they do ship abroad but as these are "chemicals" shipment is expensive. Should you want to take more Epoxy resin home let me know (1kg hars € 24 , 500gr harder €15)

fola - 10-3-2007 at 13:02

WILL be there too.... what should I bring?
Would like to Vacum form some stuff too -
and need decal tips .... possible?
The 85€ worth of stuff will be enough for
how many bodies? - might need a bit more....
will be coming Friday evening, can you suggest
a hotel room?
See u soon,
Fola

Most of the stuff you'll need we can supply, but bringing 2 pairs pair of scissors will help (buy some be new cheap scissors). Decal tips no problem. Also as we will spend a lot of time "waiting" bring some of your cars, we'll drop by the new "Hotslot" track.

The Guy that does our vacforming is fully booked for at least another week, but you can make the master's and leave them here. I can send them to you when they're done

You use some 50- 60 grams of mixed epoxy p/body (lot of waist material in the mixing cups) So that should be enough for 4-5 bodies.
You use ± 800 gr of silicone for a body mold, so you've got some extra for inserts and small detail stuff.
Silicone can be sourced locally that's not a problem, but you might want a bigger quantity of Epoxy.
I'll get you a 1kg can of epoxy resin, that uincluding the harder will cost you €40

I made the list on what you need minimally...also not everybody is on the same buget for this hobby

:holy
Tamar, what are the chance you, or Gabe/Wellen/Nick could maybe video the processes?? For me especially, this would be a huge wealth of knowledge, and I'd be prepared to pay for the Video etc naturally?

Please try and see if this can be done..

Best regards

Al

tamar - 11-3-2007 at 02:55

...killed the radio stars....
...and Skype killed video

Boet..as an IT man shame on you video ......how outdated
I'll be too busy to make a video this weekend, but as an idea, in the future we might get a small webcam and do a Skype session..one on one...interactive.....
Today's technology :holy:holy:holy:holy:holy

Alvaro - 11-3-2007 at 16:53

Hi Tamar

I also wait for video stars...:holy
I can´t travel for the worshop... We have the first race of Spanish Model-Cars in La Rioja (you remenber the wines...)

Best regards

Gert - 11-3-2007 at 17:43

Hi All and Alvaro

I will be there, and will make a photoshoot of the things we do
Edit with explaining how we did it.
Would that be of any help ?

Greetz Gert

Alvaro - 11-3-2007 at 19:37

Thank you Gert

I wait for your tutorial...:bounc:
I hope see you again in Alsdorf.

Best regards

gabe2001 - 13-3-2007 at 13:47

For those who don't know where the Hotslot factory resides ;)

Big Al - 15-3-2007 at 10:27

Gert,
that WILL be cool, and MOST helpful.. I don't think Mr T understands that we're still in 3rd World Africa, and BANDWIDTH will not be sufficient for "todays technology".. Plus, a Video of the processes could be a worthwhile fundraising excercise in disguise..

But, ANYTHING will most appretiated guys..

Be cool.

Hello Guys

Sorry for the delay, but I've been kind of very busy and ...well some other stuff....been keeping me from posting.
The Gallery is being uploaded right now, its un edited and without any comments...just the plain pics.

Workshop Gallery Pictures

If there's stuff in the pictures you have questions about, just post the pic here with your remark.
Gert, Gabe or I will try to explain.

Note: Gert you can use these images for your article, just go to the pic you want to use and open it in a new window and copy paste the URL in the article.
You can see what other html code you need in the other articles

good luck

Tamar

Now only waith for Gert`s explanais...

Thank you
:holy:holy:holy:holy

Big Al - 30-3-2007 at 09:19

Thanks Tamar,
So most of this I've covered over here. I'd say biggest difference is the material being used really.. I was hoping to see the actual laminating with "fibre" etc.. although there are some pics of it, I'm ok with all of this. Basically I need to get a different compound of resin available here, something with a longer potlife and curing times, which will allow me to work onto the mold while still "tacky" to get the fbre properly impregnated.

Will look at trying this again then in the future. Thanks for the Pics.

In the end Gert started writing his article, but somehow never really finished it... but you can find it here.
