Invasion of the Blue King
On April 21/22 the Mekka of Dutch Wing Car racing was invaded by 1/24 Model cars as round 2 of the slotracing Le Mans Series was contested on the MRTU's Blue King

Going where no Model car racer had gone before
"The King" was uncharted territory for all the teams as the MRTU's full race schedule had ruled out any training sessions prior to the event.
The circuit proved to be a real challenge for both Car and Driver.
Although it has a simple lay-out, the drivers needed to push all the way to grab those last 1/100ths of a second. The long straights, wide open corners and the high banked curve would put heavier loads on their Plafit chassis than experienced at any other track.

Even for the "slower" model cars speeds were impressive, transforming each small mistake in to a possible car crusher.

Qualification
Series debutant Rush team was the first to qualify. Team captain Robbie Piessens took the Matchbox build Toyota 88CV setting with a more than respectable 8,155 sec.
Both "Pits" teams and Special Frank could not match this time.
Next up was Matchbox, Nick de Wachter now had to outqualify one of his own cars, which he
he barely managed. With a 8,119 sec the Lola was 4/100ths of a second faster than his leased out Group-C.

back to top 8 second barrier
The BMW's of Mindpower and Smokey almost broke the 8 sec barrier. Seperated by just 1/1000th of a sec, both made near identical qualification runs. Stopping the clocks at 8,024 and 8,025 sec respectively.
First to go below the 8th was the immaculate Johan Post with the Old OLT Toyota. In a steady build up he took the GT-one faster and faster round the track. Setting a new benchmark at 7,835 sec.
Quick out of the box the Low budget Nissan was the second car to break the 8 sec. barrier but Ton Schol could not match OLT's time
Both Gurtzgen racing and Sideways were caught out by the cooler track temparatures.
For six laps they desparately looked for grip and found their set-up had backfired, as neither managed to get below the 8.10 sec.

After a more or less disappointing start of the championship in Sint Niklaas where the team faced engine problems, the Matchbox team scored a nice 70 points in Uden.Go to the Gallery
Nick the Wachter and his father Mack looked pretty pleased after the race. Besides the fact they ran into a penalty. Former team-captain Mack de Wachter, used to be responsible for both the technical as well as the tactical aspects of endurance racing. Now he has to "believe" in his sons ability to perform well at the race. Nick, one of the fastest drivers known in the circuit, is responsible for all decisions one could think of. Frequently consulting his father whether he made the right choice. Gearing-ratio, tyre choice and the front suspension need to be setup correctly in order to make any chance for victory lane.
